The family came to America in a large group from that area in the in the spring of 1854. They traveled on wagons from Basel where they caught a boat down the Rhine River toward the port of LaHavre. There were only a few people from other places on the ship GLOBE that brought the new immigrants to New Orleans. Only the son Samuel, who was 14, did not come with the others, but he did finally immigrate 10 years later. Rudolph and his sons all worked in Hermann as builders.
