Sabey D. Pingree passed away peacefully January 2, 2004 at the age of 85.

She was born Dec. 30, 1918 in Berkeley, California to Burton W. and Nevada W. Driggs. Sabey spent her youth primarily in Devils Lake, ND where her father was superintendent of the School for the Deaf. She studied at the University of North Dakota and graduated from the University of Idaho. She affiliated with Kappa Alpha Theta at both universities and served as President of Panhellenic.

Sabey received her master's degree from Gallaudet College where she majored in deaf education. While teaching the deaf in West Hartford, CT she met her husband, David R. Pingree, Jr. They were married November 14, 1942 in Miami, FL. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Salt Lake LDS Temple.

Sabey dedicated her life to her family, friends, church and her beloved deaf students. She taught the deaf in the public school systems of Connecticut, California and Utah for 25 years. She helped establish the first primary school for the deaf in Utah at Primary Children's Hospital.

Sabey was active in both the Federal Heights and Arlington Hills Wards. She loved serving as a hostess at both the LDS Church Office Building and the Lion House.

She also affiliated with the U. of U. Faculty Women's Clubs, Author's Club, Kappa Alpha Theta Alumnae Club, Ensign Club, and Daughter's of the American Revolution, where she served as Grand Regent.

Sabey is survived by her husband of 61 years, David R. Pingree, Jr. (SLC), her children: David (Jan) R. Pingree III, Trabuco Canyon, CA, Durian (Jill) Driggs Pingree, Incline Village, NV, Sabey Jane (Russell) Pingree Grange, Anchorage, AK, Benjamin (Susann) Driggs Pingree, Matthews, NC, 8 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. Also survived by her sisters, Franc D. Hanna, Wanatchee, WA and Lucille D. Madson, Tacoma, WA.

Funeral services honoring Sabey will be held Wed. January 7 at Larkin Mortuary, 260 East South Temple at 10 am with a visitation for family and friends one hour prior to services. Interment, Pleasant Grove City Cemetery.

Our family would like to thank mother's wonderful caregiving team at Garden Terrace Alzheimer's Facility for their devotion and outstanding service these last 3½ years. In lieu of flowers, family suggests contributions to the Utah Alzheimer's Association or the Breast Cancer Coalition of Utah.
