"Flying The Lat Frontier"

Louis Mass learned to fly at Davenports old Cram Field, now N.W. Park.
Louis Mass makes a living flying daily cargoes of Indians, sled dogs and supplies through the soupy skies of Alaska , sometimes narrowly missing swimming ducks or whales that drift int his low-level flight patterns, navigating by following creek beds that criss-cross untouched wilderness.

"This is strictly seat of the pants flying", say 53 year old bush pilot that has spent 10 years guiding small planes over the glistening glaciers without adequate weather information of radio communications.

He worked as a technical writer for RCA and film producer for the government-franchised jet propulsion laboratory at California Institute of Technology, Pasadena while at Cal-Tech hew was involved in various space projects like the first U.S. satellite....before hearing the call of the wild.., moving to Alaska in 1961.

While with RCA, he produced a motion picture on long range microwave communications system designed to link remote villages to the modern world.

I've always wanted to produce motion pictures about Alaska. But in order to do that, , you really had to know the country. Flying seemed to be the best way to do that.

Mass's adventures read like a TV series. As matter of fact, her has tried to sell a bush pilot " pilot" to television.
Sporting a luxuriant salt and pepper beard, the rugged looking bachelor looks like he could easily be cast in the flick, as a parka-clad pilot that follows the sun on some mysterious mission.

Louis earned a degree in journalism and cinematography at the University of Southern California after a stint as a World War II flying instructor.

He graduated from Davenport High School in 1940 before winning his lieutenant's bars and wings as a rated fighter pilot for P51 and P47.

Louis is home visiting family in Davenport from his home Galena, Alaska. Where is home is a simple plumbingless one-room cabin. In a tiny Athabascan Indian Village, located on the Yukon River midway between Nome and Fairbanks.

Mass is the chief pilot for the Galena Air Service, which flies eight aircraft ranging from a two-seat Piper to 10 passenger Beechcraft Queenair.
------------------------------------

On Nov 6, 1981 Louis Mass died when the plane in which he was a passenger crashed into mountains between Anchorage and Galena, Alaska. The pilot also was killed in the accident, which was blamed on extreme air turbulence.
--------------------------------------
In 1980 he was appointed state magistrate of Galena, Alaska. He was proud of that because he was selected of the post ahead of several lawyers, sister Marie said.
