A member of the Donner/Reed Party.

Little is known about James Smith, except that he was a bachelor, approx. 25 years of age and hailed from Springfield, Illinois. He was one of the teamsters for the Reed family, but he ended up staying with the Donners at Alder Creek during the entrapment in the winter of 1846.

On December 20, 1846, Milt Elliott, after hiking to the tent camp at Alder Creek, returned to the Lake Camp with the news that four men, including James Smith, had died at Alder Creek. It is reported that his body suffered the same fate as the other deceased emigrants that perished that winter.
