Frank R. Dodge, a retired rear admiral with San Diego connections dating to 1924 and one of the oldest graduates of the U.S. Naval Academy, is dead at age 100.
Adm. Dodge, a McLean, Va., resident, died of congestive heart failure March 13 at the home of his granddaughter in Oakton, Va.
He was a veteran of World Wars I and II and received a Silver Star in 1944 and a Legion of Merit in 1945.
The first honor was awarded for his duties as a commanding officer of the cruiser Brooklyn and a division of cruise ships in the Mediterranean. He received the Legion of Merit for his role in the battle of Okinawa.
Born in September 1895 in Adrian, Mich., he was awarded an academic scholarship to Adrian College after graduating from high school. He received his appointment to the Naval Academy a year later, graduating in time to see action in World War I.
Adm. Dodge was stationed in San Diego from 1924 to 1929 and again from 1934 to 1939. He settled in Point Loma in 1950 after his discharge from the Navy and was active in the Episcopal Church and anthropology and archaeology organizations.
Adm. Dodge outlived two wives, Dorothy Clement and Winifred Lovering Holman.
He is survived by two daughters, Elizabeth Brown of Raleigh, N.C., and Dorothy Gibson of Huntington, N.Y.; two granddaughters; and three great-granddaughters.
Services are pending at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery.
