Herman Ellis Rickard, 81, was the son of the late Altha Clorine Rickard and Lovina Virginia (Roush) Rickard.

He received his B.S. degree in Dairy Science from Ohio State University in December 1950.

Herman served in the United States Army during the Korean conflict.

After returning from the War, he received his M.S. and Ph.D. from Ohio State University.

He met Eleanor "Sue" Merritt at OSU and they were married in 1956.

Herman was a Dairy Science Professor at Cal Poly for 30 years. In addition to teaching, Herman supervised the Dairy Project and coached the Dairy Cattle Judging teams. Hundreds of project students and judging team members have fond memories of "Doc." His judging teams had many successes, including three national champion teams.

Herman's family was also of high priority and he was always proud of their accomplishments.

Mr. Rickard is survived by his wife of 53 years, Eleanor "Sue" (Merritt) Rickard; children, Matt (Dana) of Turlock, Calif., Brett (Rachelle) of Atascadero and Amy (John) Wheeler of Honey Creek, Iowa; grandchildren, Keith (Melissa) Rickard of Tulare, Calif., Kenneth (Maria) Rickard of Denair, Calif., Meredith and Austin Rickard of Atascadero, Zack Wheeler, and Ashley and Raymond Boyd of Honey Creek; siblings Ellen (Bob) Schmidt of Delaware, Ohio, Marie Jeffers of London, Ohio, and Reuben (Carolyn) Rickard of Hebbardsville, Ohio.
