Colonel M. J. Leaming. Death Overtakes Him While Camping in Highwoods

Great Falls, Aug. 9--A dispatch received this morning from Fort Benton states that Col. M.J. Leaming died last night at some place in the Highwoods where he was camping with others. It is thought that the sudden change of weather augmented the trouble of an old wound and caused his death. Col. Leaming was 51 years old.

He was born in LaPorte, Ind. He was a graduate of Wheaton college and Albany law school; acted as private secretary to Andrew Johnson. He was promoted during the war from private to colonel, receiving several wounds. After the war he practiced law in Missouri, Denver and California, coming to Montana in 1883, when he practiced at Fort Benton. Two years ago he removed to this city. He was an unsuccessful candidate for probate judge in Choteau county in 1888.

He leaves a wife and six children.
