Dr. Charles E. (Charlie) Tatum, Jr., 78, died in his home in Fredericksburg on Friday, September 3, 2010. Charlie was born on September 26, 1931 in San Antonio, Texas, the son of Charles Edward Tatum Sr. and Muriel Lorraine Covington Tatum. He is survived by one brother, William F. "Bill" Tatum and his wife Mary Anne of San Antonio and numerous nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles. Charlie was preceded in death by his parents and brothers Riley Weston Tatum and George H. Tatum. Charlie was also preceded in death by his son Leighton Tatum and daughter Michelle Tatum.
Charlie Joined the Navy just out of Thomas Edison High School in San Antonio and served on the U.S.S. Toledo in the Korean conflict. He then attended Prairie Bible Institute in Canada, the University of Corpus Christi and Baylor University. A licensed and ordained minister, Charlie served as pastor in several churches during his college years. In 1955 he served as interim pastor of First Baptist Churech in Blanco and later established Meadow Oaks Baptist Church in Temple, Texas, where he served as pastor for five years. Charlie also served as Associate Pastor for Memorial Baptist Church in Temple.
He left there to serve in evangelistic ministries setting up meetings for 72 pastors and laymen in the United Kingdom. In 1963 Charlie joined the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association and became the first Regional Director for the film ministry.
He served in that capacity and in the BGEA Development Program for twenty years. Charlie then became an aircraft dealer in association with Clark Hanger and Bill Walker on the East Coast. Charlie and his wife, Joan Bigden Tatum, with their two children lived on a ranch in Blanco for over thirty years. In 2001 he received an honorary doctorate degree from the University of Mary Hardin Baylor in Belton, Texas for his service to young people.
Funeral arrangements were under the direction of Crofts Funeral Home of Blanco. A memorial service was held at First Baptist Church of Blanco on Saturday, September 10. The Reverend Rusty Hicks and George and Gary Covin conducted the service. Interment followed at the Blanco Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association or the charity of your choice.
