A store in Farmington was opened in 1796 by Thomas Whittier and Nathanial Bishop on the site of an old Indian fort and "at the falls". The store was sold to Zacariah Butterfield in 1798. It was said that Zacariah "traded and manufactured potashe". He would have been 16 years old. He sold the store in 1802 to Jonathan Russ. The site was later known as the "Russ house".
Most of the Butterfields in Famington were from Samuel and Jonas Butterfield (brothers) who arrived there in November 1781 from Dunstable, Mass. Samuel owned lot 2 and Jonas had lot 18. In 1782 there were eight families in Farmington.Jesse Butterfield (another brother) had lot 16 in 1782. Samuel Knowlton was born Nov 14, 1782, the first child born in Farmington. Jonathan Knowlton was there in 1799. The cencuws of 1790 lists 494 inhabitants. Reuben Butterfield (brother to Samuel and Jonas) went there in 1781 with his brothers, but left and went back to Dunstable and then went back to Farmington around 1783. Thomas Hiscock owned land in Oct 1, 1798 (Martha's father). in 1810 Maine was admited to the Union. Franklin County was organized in 1838.
