"JAMES J. JONES DEAD NEAR, WEST POINT, GA. // James Judson JONES [87 years old], prominent citizen of this county, died yesterday afternoon at the home of his daughter, Mrs. R. L. NELSON, near West Point. Mr. JONES was born in 1834 in Putnam county and moved to this county in 1857. At the outbreak of the civil war he joined the Fifty-fourth [Regiment], Georgia [Infantry] and was in Captain G. E. THOMAS' company. At the close of the war, he married Miss Ora MITCHEL[L], who died Dec. 6, 1919. He lived for many years near Fortson. He was a charter member of Kimbrough Lodge Masons; also a member of the local camp of Confederate Veterans. // He is survived by eight children, Mrs. Evey Florence REEVES, of Columbus, Mrs. R. L. NELSON of West Point, Mrs. Otis WEBB of Fortson, A. D., E. C. and G. J. JONES of Macon, and J. G. and T. M. JONES of Fortson, and a brother, David JONES of Phenix City; also 19 grandchildren. Columbian Lodge Masons will conduct the services. Rev. Alex COPELAND will officiate. The sons will be the active pallbearers. The honorary pallbearers follow: Jno. T. DAVIS, J. C. COOK, C. A. LOVELACE, T. W. FORTSON, G. W. WHITE and J[ames] M[onroe] LOKEY. Funeral will be held at Mt. Zion [Missionary Baptist] church at Double Churches Wednesday morning at 11 o'clock, the interment following at the family burial grounds there. // The deceased was widely known in this county and his death will be learned with deep regret by his many friends." [Columbus (GA) Enquirer newspaper, Tuesday, 08 NOV 1921, p. 3.]

JONES reported in pension applications that in service he received gunshot wounds to the left hand and left thigh. An application for pension on his Civil War service filed in 1894 in Muscogee County was evidently denied. An 1897 application appears to have been approved, and he continued to receive a pension in Muscogee County until at least 1907. An application for benefits due a deceased pensioner was filed in Muscogee County in 1921.
