George Vincent Eugene Gear, well-known and respected business man and World War I veteran passed away thursday at the Hazel Green hospital in Wisconsin. "Vince" as he was known by, had been in ailing health for two years although his condition was not considered serious until entering the hospital October 01 of this year. (1944) Vince was born in Galena on September 01, 1891, the son of John Clark and Margaret Robail Gear. He had been one of Galena's leading business men owning and operating Gears Appliance Store and Shell Gas on main street Galena. He was known for his jovial disposition and generous nature.Vince was a friend of everyone and was never happier than when he was doing for others. Mrs. R.W.Klein sang two family favorite hymns, "Beautiful Isle of Somewhere" and "Sometime We'll Understand", she was accompanied by Mrs. Bishop at the organ. He was a member of Fickbohm post no. 193 of American Legion. Vince is survived by one son, Sgt. Charles Gear with the U.S. Army in New Guinea, daughter-in-law, Mary and grand daughter, Clariene of Rockford, Illinois. Three sisters, Mrs Maud Beismann and Mrs. Jennie Montgomery of Galena and Mrs. Lillian Williams of Madison, Wisconsin, brother Clark (Fat) Gear of Galena. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother who died in infancy.

The Greenwood military cemetery marker for George V.E.Gear contains the wrong death year of 1945. The death year of 1944 is accurate.
