Lyman Bennett, son of Adolphus Fowler Bennett and Jane Garzee, enlisted as a private on 16 April 1864 at the age of 18. He joined Company E, 7th Iowa Cavalry Regiment on 26 April 1864. He died of disease at Fort Kearney, Nebraska on 26 August 1865.

His father, Adolphus Bennett, son of Robert Chapman Bennett, was born about 1813 in Massachusetts. His mother, Jane Garzee, daughter of Elijah Garzee, was born 30 Jan 1817 in Bennington County, Vermont.
