Son of the late Walter Burl and Lessie Lee Gibbs Spencer, he was a member of Engelhard Christian Church. He worked as a commercial fisherman and at the Washington Daily News. He was survived by three sons, Edwin Spencer, Ricky Spencer (Amber) and Elijah Spencer; two daughters, Keri Spencer and Elisha Shelton (Kahler); and wife Pamela Spencer; a brother, Shirlen Spencer (Betty); eight grandchildren. His funeral was held on September 17, 2010, with Scott Sukeforth officiating.
