427 Squadron's Handley Page Halifax BIII (#LW166) aircraft, coded ZL-S, with an aircrew of seven took off from RAF Leeming to participate in a major night air operation against the rail yards at Villeneuve St. Georges, France. The Halifax failed to return to base, having crashed in France, taking the lives of two crew members [pilot Flying Officer Moss had kept control of the plane, allowing his crew time to bail out, but he went down with the Halifax]. Three airmen were taken PoW; two others were able to evade capture.
The two airmen who perished in the crash were-
RCAF Flying Officer Claude Alexander MOSS and
RAFVR Sergeant William Arthur STEELE.
