Chico Daily Record [newspaper] carried the following entries at the time of his passing:
Tuesday, April 13, 1902, pg 4; News in General
The funeral of John C Allwardt will take place this morning at 10 o'clock from the family residence.

Monday, April 14, 1902 edition:
"Died Allwardt - in Chico, April 13, 1902
John C Allwardt, son of Mr & Mrs Wm Allwardt - native of Germany, aged 19 years, 6 months, and 21 days. Funeral Tuesday."

April 16, 1902 edition:
"Card of Thanks
William Allwardt and family desire to extend their thanks to the friends who so kindly gave them their assistance during the illness of their son John Allwardt, and after his death."

May 1902 the Chico Normal School monthly publication, The Normal Record. on pg 7, the section at the bottom of the page, "Resolutions of Sympathy" included
"WHEREAS, Our Heavenly Father has seen fit to remove from the home of our esteemed classmate, Ida Allwardt, her beloved brother; and
WHEREAS, This great loss so deeply felt by her has awakened in our hearts the deepest sympathy, therefore be it
Resolved, That we, the members of the second term, extend to her our most sympathetic feelings; and be it
Resolved, that a copy of these resolutions be printed in the NORMAL RECORD and a copy forwarded to the bereaved family"

PARENTS: Johan's father, William H. Allwardt, (Mar 8, 1856 – Feb 18, 1922) was born in Mecklenburg, Germany on March 8, 1856, the son of John and Heiden Caroline Allwardt. William came to the US when he was 16 years old (about 1872). On 2 January 1877, William became a naturalized citizen of the USA, occupation farmer. For many years William resided in Iowa. In 1881, William married Lizzie Augusta Sander
Johan's mother, Lizzie Augusta Sander Allwardt (Sep 19, 1861 – Nov 2, 1946) was born in Muscatine, Iowa the daughter of Christian Sander (born Dec 25, 1819 in Otkfrazen Kosrich, Hanover, Germany). On May 15, 1859, Christian married Ida Echoff in Sweetland Township, Muscatine, Iowa. Ida Echoff was born March 14, 1839 in Manstate, Holstine, Germany.
Lizzie and William Allwardt had seven children, all born in US, the first five in Muscatine, Iowa, and the last two in Ft Bragg California:
1) Johan Christian Allwardt was born 16 September 1882 in Muscatine Iowa. died Apr 13, 1902 in Chico, CA
2) Walther Wilhelm Allwardt, 13 Jan 1884 in Muscatine Iowa, died Mar 23, 1923, in Chico following attack of accute appendicitis.
3) Ida Caroline (Allwardt) Simmons, Dec 9, 1885 in Muscatine Iowa, died July 21, 1945; married C Frank Simmons,
4) Hulda Sophia (Allwardt) Simmons 3 Apr 1887 in Muscatine Iowa, died 20 May 1954; married 17Oct 1908 to William Lewis Simmons (brother of CF Simmons).
5) Effie Rebecca (Allwardt) Rhoades, 24 Jan 1889 - 3 Oct 1980; married 9Aug 13 to John C Rhoades.
William & Lizzie added two more children to the family while in Fort Bragg:
6) Oliver Hemerick.Allwardt, Jan 26, 1891in Fort Bragg,CA, died 20 Aug 1966, in Willows, CA of an apparent heart attack; married 26 Sep 1919 to Elsie L Oliphant.
7) Carl Baldwin Allwardt, 21 May 1892 in Fort Bragg, died 21 April 1971; married Wood Margorie Tyrell Dec 28, 1916.

The eldest child of William H Allwardt and Lizzie August Sander Allwardt, Johan Christian Allwardt was born 16 September 1882 in Muscatine Iowa. He died Apr 13, 1902 in Chico, California.

Johan spent the first 7 years of his life in Muscatine, until 1890, when the family moved from Iowa to California, settling in the town of Fort Bragg on the north coast of California.

The Mendocino Beacon newspaper of 28 August 1897, pg 1, column 5, under the column heading, FROM FORT BRAGG – a Snap Shot of the Doings of a Week" included: "John Allwardt was struck in the eye one day last week while playing at school. At first it was thought he would lose the sight of that member but at present it is thought it can be saved."

The family moved to Chico, CA from Ft Bragg in 1899. Mr Allwardt secured a position as gardener of the Bidwell Mansion grounds.

Significant Event during the years Johan Allwardt lived in Chico:
April 4, 1900. General John Bidwell died and was buried in the Chico Cemetery.

Johan Christian Allwardt died at age 18 in Chico on April 13, 1902. He was the first family member buried in the Allwardt plot in Chico Cemetery.

He was survived by his parents and six brothers and sisters.

DIRECTIONS: To find the Grave in the Chico Cemetery, enter the cemetery on its east side off of Mangrove Ave, then around the garden and turn right (west); proceed approximately 100 yards on the cemetery road and turn left (south). Drive past the cemetery offices approximately 200 yards into the Masonic Pioneer section of the cemetery. Park on the road. The Allwardt plot is in Section 12 of the cemetery, 50-60 yards east of where the car is parked.
