Chester Black, loving husband of Ruby Black and cherished father of Vickie Mumma, went to be with Jesus Christ, his personal Lord and Savior on August 18, 2010. He passed away at St. John's Hospital in Oxnard. Chester was a kind and compassionate man, with a wonderful sense of humor. He will be missed by his family and all who knew him. His family was his pride and joy! Many memories were made taking camping trips to Yosemite, Sequoia and many other beautiful parks. In recent years he loved taking cruises with Ruby, Vickie and her husband Lee. He was a very proud grandfather and great-grandfather to Brent, Tiffany, Matthew and his wife Sera, Owen, Adelyn and Anabel Mumma. Chester was born August 14, 1918 in McNeil, Arkansas to Loda and Benjamin Black. He enlisted August 7, 1941 in the U.S. Army Infantry. He served his country during World War II under the leadership of General Bradley of the 5th Armored Division. His battle campaigns included North France, Normandy, Rhineland, Central Europe and Ardennes. He received 5 bronze stars, 2 purple hearts, a good conduct medal and was nominated for a medal of honor. Chester was credited for helping to liberate a Jewish POW camp. Chester met the love of his life after the war while he was back home in Arkansas. He married his beloved wife Ruby on September 10, 1949. They have been married almost 61 years. They came to California to visit Chester's sister and Ruby's brother and fell in love with the area. They made Oxnard their new home in 1950. They had a daughter Vickie born in 1954 and a son, Douglas, born in 1957. He worked at the Port Hueneme naval Base as a hi lift operator until he retired in 1974. After his retirement he worked part time at Ocean View Children's Center in the maintenance department. Chester was a devoted Christian and an active and faithful member of Oxnard Grace Bible Church. He volunteered 30 years for the food share organization working in the fields to provide food for the hungry. He loved to help others. He was a member of the National Active and Retired Federal Employees Association and the American Legion Post # 0048. Chester was preceded in death by his son Douglas Black; his parents Loda and Benjamin Black; and his brother Ben Black. He is survived by his wonderful wife; his daughter Vickie and son-in-law Lee Mumma of Oxnard; his sister Rena Clymer of Sacramento; his precious grandchildren Brent Mumma of Susanville, Calif; Tiffany Mumma of Jackson, Wyo.; Matthew and his wife Sera Mumma of Jackson, Wyo.; and his three adorable great-grandchildren Owen, Adelyn and Anabel Mumma also of Jackson, Wyo.; and numerous nieces and nephews. Arrangements are under the direction of Conrad Carroll Mortuary in Oxnard. A memorial service to celebrate the life of Chester will be held at Grace Bible Church, 936 W. Fifth St, Oxnard, Ca on Monday, August 23, 2010 at 11 a.m. Burial will follow at Ivy Lawn Cemetery, Ventura, Ca.
