Made Brigadier General (24th brigade) during the Civil War on June 10, 1863.
Before that he was on the board of directors for the Syracuse and Northwestern Railroads.
Was under scrutiny in the Syracuse area for his association with the "Copperheads" (peace-seeking Democrats who wanted to make a treaty with the south to end the Civil War immediately). Many thought him to be a traitor.
Was the Democratic nominee for Syracuse mayor in 1867.
