The Chico Enterprise (Chico, California) 22 Oct 1927, Saturday Page 1(continued): The ruins of the large still and four barrels were plainly visible after the fire had burned itself out.

Akin with G.W. Evans had rented the house about one month ago, according to Westfall, who attributes Akin’s inability to escape to the probability that he was covered with blazing alcohol as a result of the explosion. The top of the still was blown off and the coils were wrecked. The ruins of the apparatus were found near the center of the ruins while the bones of the body were found in a cellar in the rear.

Evans told the officers he had rented two front rooms of the house from P.S. Vaughn who had leased the tract from C.H. Richardson of Oakland for the grazing of sheep while Akin had occupied the rear of the dwelling. Evans denied any knowledge of the still on the premises.

An automobile bearing a tag on the windshield indicating that it had been purchased by Akin from Joy I. Allen was found near the house by officials.

Akin is survived by a daughter, Edna, nine years old, who resides with an uncle, Fred Gentle of Gray Way; another daughter, Freda, 14, who lives with an aunt, Mrs. J.E. Heckert of 28 North Commercial street, Stockton, and another daughter, Mrs. George B. Calvert, 253 San Carlos street, San Francisco.

It was learned also today that Akin had a police record, having been sentenced on September 8 of this year by Judge Frederick J. Rose to pay a fine of $100 following his plea of guilty to charges of reckless driving, a reduction of a charge of driving an automobile while under the influence of liquor. The fine was to have been paid in monthly installments of $20, only one of which had been paid by Akin at the time of his death. Judge Rose extended clemency because of the fact that Akin claimed he had three daughters to whom he was contributing support.

The coroners jury which inquired into the cause of death this afternoon returned the following verdict:

“We the jury believe that on or about October 21, J.W. Akin came to his death by cremation in a house destroyed by fire of unknown origin and to the best of knowledge and belief the remains of the body found are those of John W. Akin.”
