Edward and his brother Christian drowned crossing the ice on the Kanawha River after having gone to a party and were on their way to their sister's home.

The body found floating in the Kanawha River at Scary Monday has been identified as that of George C Hutter, who was drowned just above Kanawha Falls on the night of December 26 last, although the body was minus the head and one arm, when discovered and taken out of the water.
On that date, George C Hutter and his brother Risk had crossed the river to visit W H Williamson at Glen Ferris, and started to return home about 11 o'clock that night. One of them carried a lantern but the fog on the river was so heavy that they evidently got lost and wandered close to the dam above the falls where the ice was thin and dangerous. It is thought that George broke through the ice and his brother tried to save him, for Risk's overcoat and lantern were found on the ice beside the hole where they were drowned and it is supposed he threw them off and sprang into the icy water to save his brother.
A reward of $25 was offered for the recovery of each body. The body of Rick Hutter was found just above Lock No 2 about two weeks later.
Risk Hutter was 38 years old. their parents, Mr and Mrs Edward Hutter, reside at Lynchburg, and the body of George was prepared for burial and shipped there Tuesday.
