Dr. A. P. Jarrell Dies
State School Assistant Superintendent

Dr Albert Polk Jarrell, assistant state superintendent of schools and the director of the Office of Vocational Rehabilitation Services, died Tuesday in the Georgia Baptist Hospital in Atlanta.

Dr Jarrell, who would have been 60 years old Saturday, had been vocational rehabilitation director since 1955. He was appointed assistant state school superintendent in 1964.

After serving as principal of Central School in Taylor Co., and as superintendent of the Chattahoochee Co. public schools for 10 years before joining The State department of Education. In 1940 he became a counselor with the State Vocational Rehabilitation Department.

Develops Board
As the director of the department, he was instrumental in developing inter-agency cooperation and co-ordination of services. He also developed a medical advisory board for the Georgia program of physical restoration.

Dr. Jarrell represented Georgia at the World Congress of the International Rehabilitation of the Disabled in Weisbaden, Germany in 1964, he was elected president of the National Rehabilitation Association, which had presented him with the President's Award in 1962.

The A. P. Jarrell Pre-Vocational Training and Evaluation Center in Atlanta, a center for the mentally retarded, was named for Dr. Jarrell. A similar center to be opened in Macon also will commemorate him.

Other Activities
Dr. Jarrell was a board member of the Georgia Society for Crippled Children and Adults, the Cerebral Palsy Society, Goodwill Industries pf Atlanta, the Factory for the Blind, and the Hospital Advisory Board.

Albert was a native of Butler, Taylor Co., GA, and he is a graduate of Taylor County schools. He attended Young Harris College and received his B.A. and M.A. from the University of Georgia. He did post-graduate work at Mercer and New York Universities.

Dr Jarrell was a farmer official board chairman of the Glynn Memorial Methodist Church and a member of the Kappa Delta Pi and Kappa Phi Kappa Honor Societies. He was a Mason, a Shriner, and a member of the Lion's Club.

Services will be held at 2 pm today at the Glenn Memorial Methodist Church in Atlanta, with burial at 3 pm in the Parkhill Cemetery in Columbus.

He is preceded in death by his father, Floyd Cannon Jarrell, Sr. and his brother, Thelmon Floyd Jarrell

He leaves to cherish his memory, his wife, Carolyn Parham Jarrell, and two daughters, Miss Carolyn Jarrell and Miss Marianne Jackson Jarrell, all of Atlanta; his mother, Mrs. Floyd Cannon Jarrell (former, Mary Lee Dora McCants), of Butler, GA; five brothers, Dr Floyd Cannon Jarrell, Jr., and Dr Harold George Jarrell, both of Columbus, GA, Frederick 'Fred' Stanford Jarrell and John Garmon Jarrell, both of Butler, GA, and Arthur Chappel Jarrell, of Athens, GA; and three sisters, Mrs Dequindre McGlaum (Willie 'Marie' Jarrell), of Columbus, GA, Mrs Hugh Cheek (Cathryn Julia Jarrell), and Hazel Monnie Jarrell, both of Butler, GA.

Serving as pallbearers were: John Prickett, Joe Hise, Nathan Nolan, William A Craft, Hon Henry Stewart, and the staff and personnel of the Vocational Rehabilitation Services of the State of Georgia, escorted by Louis Schubert and the State Board of Education and State Superintendent of Schools, Jack Nix.
