Thomas died at his home in Marietta from paralysis (stroke). He was seventy-five years of age.  Thomas and Mary Elizabeth Bailey were married in Georgia in 1865. They had 18 children.

Thomas was a veteran of the Civil War. He was a resident of Adair County, Iowa, when he enlisted as a Private with the 1st U.S. Lancers on 30 Oct 1861 at the age of 24 years. The Lancers disbanded in Nov 1861, and on 5 Dec 1861 Thomas mustered in Co I 4th Iowa Cavalry. He was wounded in action (thigh; severe) on 22 Jun 1863 at Bear Creek (Jones's Plantation) near Vicksburg, Mississippi. During the remainder of his service, he drove an ambulance. Thomas re-enlisted and re-mustered on 29 Feb 1864 and mustered out with his company on 8 Aug 1865 at Atlanta, Georgia.
