Enlisted as a Private on September 30, 1861 at the age of 20. Joined Co. H, 12th Iowa Infantry Regiment on October 26, 1861.

Wounded April 6, 1862 at Shiloh, TN. Died in camp on August 20, 1863 at Camp Sherman, MS.
