Baseball Hall of Fame Team Owner. Born Detroit, Michigan, he was a successful industrialist when he bought the Boston Red Sox for $1.2 million as sole owner in 1933. For the next 44 years, he dedicated his time and finances to building winning teams and was respected by his managers and his players. His best seasons were when the Red Sox captured the American League pennant in 1946, 1967 and 1975, then went on to lose each World Series in seven games. As an executive, he was a popular, generous man and a leader among big league owners and served as American League vice president (1956-73). He died at age 73 in Boston, Massachusetts and was posthumously elected into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1980.
