She was the daughter of Jonathan Spencer (1784-1822) and Eleanor Robinson (1785-1836) of Talbot County, Maryland. Her father was the captain of the Surprise, which in 1818 was the first steamer that plied the Chesapeake Bay. For a few years it engaged in traffic between Baltimore and Frenchtown and later the direct route between Baltimore and Philadelphia.
