Benedict Guggenmos was born in Bavaria, Germany, January 2lst,1847. His parents died when he was quite young and he was adopted into a family that gave him the name, "Guggenmos." We are not able to learn much about his boyhood except at the usual age for a German boy he was mustered into the German army in which he served five years. During his period of service the France-Prussian war or the war between Germany and France in 1870-1871 occurred and Mr. Guggenmos saw active service in it. The Fall of 1914 he told the editor that he was in the German army camped near Paris at the time that city surrendered to the Germans, but that he did not belong to the part of the army that entered Paris.

After his discharge from the army, he went back to his native town and here was united in marriage to Miss Barbara Schmidt probably in 1873. To this union eight children were born, six sons and two daughters. They were Antone, Mark, Veronika, Sophia, Henry, Bert George and John. The first six were born in Germany, where Bert died at the age of but a day or two. Veronika died in 1880 at the age of 13 years and was buried in the Sargent Cemetery. Mr. and Mrs. Guggenmos came to America in the year 1883 and in the year 1884 they came to Custer County and made a homestead entry on a quarter section of hill land three and one half miles north of Sargent. Later he made timber claim entry on another quarter section and still later he purchased another quarter section. During the year 1903 Mrs. Guggenmos died and was interred in the Sargent Cemetery (Mount Hope Cemetery) alongside her daughter Veronika.

In the year 1905 he was again married, this time to Marre Princezien. To this union one child was born, Mike Guggenmos now fourteen years of age. About the year 1906 Mr. Guggenmos sold his land north of town and purchased forty acres a mile east and a mile south of Sargent from Arthur Cooksley who had a short time before acquired it. Here he established a home, erecting a house, barn and making other necessary improvements. About a year ago he purchased from Mr. Cooksley 100 acres, making 200 acres he possessed at the time of his death. For several months Mr. Guggenmos's health has been failing. Three weeks before his death he took to his bed. Death came at 5:30 o'clock Friday afternoon, May 27lh. The funeral services were held at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Sunday morning in the presence of an audience of mourners and friends that filled the church to the limit of its capacity, many having to remain outside. The Reverend Father Moser, pastor of the church here, conducted the services following which the body was interred in the family lot in Mount Hope cemetery where it now reposes alongside those of his wife and daughter who preceded him so many years ago.

The Pallbearers were Albert Smith, Ernest Morris, Carl Cole, Roy Sweet, James E. Werber and Milo Moore, men who have known Mrs. Guggenmos since they were boys. All of Mr. Guggenmos's children were in attendance at the funeral with the exception of George who lives at Vera, Saskatchewan, Canada. We give here the residences of the others. Antone Guggenmos four miles north of Old; Mark at Ord; Sophia, Mrs. John Werber, sixteen miles north of Ord; Henry in this city, and John one half mile south of Taylor.
