He was retired from Phillip Morris USA and was a member of Yates Chapel Church.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Bruce and Rachel Sutherland, and a brother Ronald Sutherland.
He is survived by he wife of 45 years, Carrie Sue; one daughter, Allison English of Cumberland; three sons, Rodney and wife Trish Sutherland of Purcellville, Randy Sutherland of Clintwood and Robbie Sutherland of Powhatan; seven grandchildren, R.J. and Jenni English, Nicole English, Carrie English, Shyanne Blankenship, Rebecca Sutherland, Kayla Sutherland and Genea Sutherland; one great-grandchild, Colby James English; five sisters, Pat and husband Dan Taylor, Vivian and husband, Billy Rockwell, Wanda and husband, Richie Yates, Linda and husband Danny Powers and Kitty and husband Jamie Rutledge; two sister-in-law, Margaret Ann Sutherland and "Mom" Ruth Mullins Quesenberry; several aunts, uncles, niece, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services were held Monday, August 23 at Haysi Funeral Home with Gary Stanley officiating. Burial followed in the Dewey Sutherland Cemetery at Lick Creek.
Pallbearers were friends and family.
