Civil War Congressional Medal of Honor Recipient. Born in Centre County, Pennsylvania, he enlisted in the Union Army at Milesburg, Pennsylvania on August 29, 1862, and was mustered in as a Private in Company B, 148th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry. He would go on to be awarded the CMOH for his bravery at the Battle of Spotsylvania, Virginia on May 12, 1864. His citation read "Capture of battle flag of 8th North Carolina (C.S.A.), being one of the foremost in the assault". His Medal was awarded to him on January 31, 1865. He was wounded severely during his service, losing his right leg at the hip, and was honorably discharged to those wounds on May 30, 1865 at Washington, DC. He was one of four 148th Pennsylvania Infantry soldiers to be awarded the Medal of Honor for bravery during the Civil War (the others being Captain Jeremiah Z. Brown, Private George W. Harris, and Private Josiah Phillips).
