Deborah was born and raised in the Mt. Joy Township of Adams County, Pennsylvania to parents Friedrich and Deborah Steiner.
Their marriage was announced in the 21 Dec 1821 Republican Compiler, Gettysburg, Pennsylvania: "Married on Thursday last (13 Dec 1821), by the Rev. John Herbst, Mr. Joseph Leatherman, of Frederick county, Md., to Miss Deborah Steiner, of Mountjoy township, Adams county (PA)."
Upon their marriage, Deborah moved to Frederick County, Maryland to live on Joseph's farm. They had no known children. Upon Joseph's death in 1837, Deborah apparently moved back to Adams County to live with relatives there until her death in 1863.
The surname on the gravestone is clearly wrong, but it's unknown how the error came to be. It's conceivable that Deborah had no surviving family at her death (as inferred from the gravestone inscription), and none of Deborah's surviving friends had known her husband that had died 25 years earlier. It's also conceivable that Deborah spoke with a stutter or accent (perhaps from a stroke?) that made it difficult for her to say her name correctly. However, we are confident of the match based on birth & death dates, marriage records, and the lack of any other "Leatheramanas" in the area during this period.
