"The accidental murder of Col. Armstrong, father of the late Hugh Armstrong and Bailey Armstrong, was perpetrated by John Harmon. The cause is said to be that William White attempted to shoot Harmon, whom he missed, when Harmon fired on White, but the bullet struck the Colonel, who fell dead instantly." Goodspeed's 1888 history of Newton County.
