Mrs. Hobson Carter Dies in Washington
Services for Mrs. Margaret Hobson Carter, 84, Chickasaw county school teacher for 19 years, who died Tuesday, July 3, in Washington, D C, at the home of her daughter, were conducted Saturday, July 7, from the Wesley Chapel Church with the Rev. E H Cunningham officiating.
Burial was in the Wesley Chapel Cemetery with Kilgore-Norman Funeral Home in charge.
Pallbearers were: Preston Carter, Herbert Carter, Dan Thomas, Howard Davis, Dock Davis, and Herbert Miller.
For the past 23 years, Mrs. Carter had resided in Washington with her daughter, Mrs. Gene Smith. Her death was attributed to a heart disease. She had been ill about two weeks.
She was born Oct. 24, 1871, in South Carolina, the daughter of the late William Hobson and Emma Thomas Hobson. She taught school at the old Parkersburg School in Chickasaw county, and many residents of this area went to school under her. For several years she was house-mother at the Palmer Orphanage, Columbus, Miss.
She was a member of the Mt. Vernon Methodist Church, Washington, D C.
She leaves three daughters, Mrs. Smith of Washington, Mrs. Zelda Overstreet of Louisville, Ky., and Mrs. W F Davis of Van Vleet, Miss.; a son, Lemuel Davis of Washington, D C; and two sisters, Mrs. Fred Daggett of West Point, Miss., and Mrs. Essie Coburn of Greenwood, Miss.
In trying to describe the life of Mrs. Carter, a friend said—"God's great are those who from everywhere and under every condition live the beautiful, sweet life. She was always true to the highest and noblest things, rich or poor, learned or unlearned."
