The following research notes are from Sue Silver:

Bridgeport Chronicle-Union, 3/7/1908, Saturday:

No More. He Sleeps to Wake, No Never.

Guiseppi Scanavino, or better known as “Goat ranch Joe,” a respected and well known resident of this county, died at his home at the Goat Ranch on the Bodie and Lundy road last Sunday (=3/1/1908), surrounded by his large family and several ministering friends.

Joe, as he was most commonly known, had been a sufferer from dropsy for the past eight months and that dread disease was the cause of his death.

The body was taken to Bodie and Wednesday was laid to rest on the hill-side under the auspices of the Knights of Pythias, assisted by the A.O.U.W. of which lodges he was an old and worthy member.

He was 67 years old and a native of Italy. He came to this country when but a youth and for a number of years made his home around Virginia City, where he worked as a batteryman in the mills. In 1879 he came to Bodie and with two partners bought the Goat Ranch which has since been his home. In 1889 he made a trip to Italy where he was married, returning the same year with his bride. This union was blessed with twelve children, eleven of whom survive and with the faithful wife are his heart-broken mourners.

The brave fight that the deceased made to give his children an education made him a familiar picture before the Board of Supervisors of this county and by his sincere words gained assistance for years and the final establishment of a school district at his place.

Joe was an honest man, a faithful husband, a kind and loving father and an upright citizen. Let this be his monument for he could ask for none greater.
