Author of "The Northwest Coast or, Three Years' Residence in Washington Territory," published in 1857, one of the first books about Washington Territory. Swan went on to become Indian Agent for the Makah people at Cape Flattery and to served as correspondent to the Smithsonian, collecting information and cultural artifacts from many northwest Native peoples.
