1st Lieutenant David Harold Young was a military pilot during World War I. He was assigned to the 96th Aero Squadron on July 18, 1918. This squadron was the first in the United Air Service to have bombardment as its sole mission. The squadron was based at Amanty Airdrome, France.
As a pilot in the 96th, Young flew a Breguet 14 bomber on numerous bombing raids between August 1 and November 4, 1918. Lieutenant Young was the flight leader of the last bombing raid of the war. Then "Captain" Young also co-authored much of the Squadron's history that appears in Gorrell's History.
Following the War, Young stayed in aviation. He was the aviation Manager for Pure Oil for thirty-five years. He was an active in the Early Birds of Aviation, holding a responsible position within that organization. He retired from the U.S. Air Force as a lieutenant colonel after World War II.
