H.D. "Hazard" Ownby was born in north Georgia to farmer parents, one of five boys. He met his wife Gussie while stationed at the Charleston Naval Yard and they married in 1920. By the mid 20's they had moved to Florida, first ot Deland, then to Orlando, near the Dubstread golf course. Dillard (as Gussie called him) got a job with the Florida Power & Light Company, but was injured early on. His injury continued to cause him back pain throughout life, but it also taught him something about occupational safety. He became the Safety Director for FP&L, working there his entire career, until he and Gussie retired to Riverview, FL. His passions were fishing and smoking, and he would also take a nip every once in a while in his workshop, away from his wife's disapproving eye. He died of a heart attack while hospitalized for his chronic angina; the shock of hearing that his wife's sister, Hattie Mae, had been killed suddenly apparently caused the fatal attack.
