Funeral for former Sheridan and Willamina resident Fred Albert "Fritz" Simonson of Salem will be held at 11 a.m. Monday in Emmanuel Lutheran Church, Willamina, with the Rev. Debra Carlson officiating. Friends may call at Adamson's Sheridan Funeral Home.

Mr. Simonson died July 21, 2004, in Salem. He was 83. Private interment will be in Green Crest Memorial Park, Sheridan.

He was born Feb. 9, 1921, in Astoria, son of Emil and Maria Oja Simonson. He graduated from Astoria High School in 1939. During World War II, he served in the Army Air Forces as the pilot of B-17 bombers and flight navigator on B-29 bombers.

He and Irene Pietila married in 1946. She preceded him in death in 1984.

The Simonsons moved to Sheridan in 1953 and he was active in the community and the family business, Simonson Bros. Logging Co. He retired in 1966.

He was a member of Emmanuel church, Masonic Gateway Lodge 175, the Elks Lodge and the Sheridan Volunteer Fire Department. Mr. Simonson was an avid outdoorsman, hunter and fisherman.

He and Mildred Alder married in 1984 and they moved to Willamina. From 1985 to 2003, they spent winters in Yuma, Ariz. In 1990, they moved to Salem and had lived there since.

Survivors include his wife of Salem; two daughters, Christie Turnbull of Leavenworth, Wash., and Cathy Perry of Bellevue, Wash.; a stepdaughter, Judy Dewey of Cameron Park, Calif.; three sisters, Lempi Larson and Esther Lampi, both of Astoria, and Hilma Backman of Marinette, Wis.; two brothers, Arvid Simonson of Astoria and Hugo Simonson of Albuquerque, N.M.; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
