Pioneer Woman Dentist Is Dead
Dr. Edith Jewell Garrels Succumbs at Home in Arlington County
Dr. Edith Jewell Garrels, said to be one of the first women to practice dentistry in the District, died yesterday at her residence, Dawson Terrace, Mackeys Hill, Arlington County, Virginia.
Friends of Mrs. Garrels said that she was the first woman to be graduated in dentistry from any of the medical schools in Washington. She received her degree from the Medical School of the old Columbian College, now George Washington University in 1899. She was a member of the Gunton Temple Christian Church and the Woman's Christian Temperance Union.
Funeral services will be held at 2:30 o'clock tomorrow afternoon at the S.H. Hines Funeral Parlors, 2910 Fourteenth Street Northwest. The Rev. Barnard Baskamp, pastor of Gunton Temple Presbyterian Church will officiate. Burial will be private at Oak Hill Cemetery.
