United States Intelligence Official. He was serving as the Central Intelligence Agency Station Chief in Lebanon when he was taken hostage in March 1984 by militant Palestinian group Hezbollah. Evidence came out later that he was beaten and tortured, and died while in captivity. Hezbollah claimed they executed him, but medical evidence suggested he died of a heart attack from the torture. His remains were not recovered until they were found in Beirut, Lebanon in December 1991. Previous to his CIA career, he had served in the United States Army, rising to Lieutenant Colonel and seeing combat during the Korean and Vietnam Wars.
