Rowena O. (Bable) Smathers, 69, of Kittanning RD7, North Buffalo Township, died Thursday, Jan. 28, 1999 at Shadyside Hospital, Pittsburgh. She was born Aug. 10, 1929 in Ford Cliff to John M. and Mabel L. (Hill) Bable. Mrs. Smathers was previously employed at the Kittanning Telephone Company; she was employed at the former Pittsburgh Plate Glass Industries, Ford City and her last employment was for Mid County Transit Authority, where she was a bus driver. She was a member of Grace Presbyterian Church, Kittanning, where she was a member of the Women’s Circle. She is survived by her husband, Roy S. Smathers, whom she married on Feb. 18, 1950 and to whom she was married for 48 years; three daughters, Mrs. Michael (Karen) Bryson of Pittsburgh, Mrs. Thomas (Deborah) Slagle of Kittanning and Traci McGinnis of Kittanning RD7, North Buffalo Township; five grand-children; one great-grandchild, two brothers, Wendell Bable and Lee Ottis Bable, both of Butler and one sister, Marcella Stockes of Florida. She was preceded in death by her parents; one infant son, Scott Smathers; one infant daughter, Tammy Smathers, one brother, Wesley Bable and one sister, Mildred Shernock. SMATHERS – Friends of Rowena O. (Bable) Smathers, 69, of Kittanning RD7, who died Jan. 28, 1999, will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday and 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday at the Welch Funeral Home, 1032 Fourth Ave., Ford City, where funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday with the Rev. Robert Burns of the North Buffalo Grace Brethren Church and her pastor, the Rev. Steve Brundage, co-officiating. Interment will take place in Salem Reformed Cemetery, Cowanshannock Township.
