Edna May Kemp Derringer was my maternal Grandmother. She was born in Liberty, Ohio and was the first daughter of Newton M. Kemp and (Ellen) Ella Missouri Warner. She had 7 siblings: Arthur, Ivan, Leslie, Warren, Earl, John, Grace and Frank. In January, 1908 she was baptised at Bear Creek Reformed Church. She married Arthur Chester Derringer, a friend of her older brothers, on October 18, 1910 in Cinncinati, Ohio. My Mom thinks they lived for a year or so with Newton and Ella, with her Dad working on their farm for his father-in-law. Edna's father, Newton Kemp heard( from one of his wife's cousins living in North Dakota) about cheap land being available in a newly developed part of Canada, called Saskatchewan. He went up and looked at it and bought some land and then, sent his sons, Arthur and Leslie to work the land. Arthur accompanied them up to Saskatchewan. The plan was for him to stay a while to help and then, return to Ohio. A few months later,Arthur asked Edna to follow him up to Canada, by train. This was suppose to be a temporary arrangement, but much to Edna's chagrin, Arthur decided he would like to get some land of his own and try his hand at farming and settle in Canada!. My Grandmother had wanted to go back to Ohio, but figured they would just spend a few years here, like her brothers and their wives decided to do. They did acquire land and made a homestead in Secretan, Saskatchewan. Their first child, daughter Mabel Irene (the first grandchild for Ella and Newton)was the first white baby girl born in the area. After a few years and another child, Arthur,Jr., Edna being homesick and missing family and civilization, they decided to sell their little farm and return home to Ohio. They
