Son of William Patterson and Mary Elizabeth Taylor. He moved to Allamakee County Iowa with his parents in the spring of 1854.

He married Mary Jane Laughlin on February 18, 1859 and they became the parents of Newton, Amy, Cora, and Roland.

He enlisted in the Union army in 1862. In 1872 the Pattersons left Allamakee County and relocated in Guthrie County, where Andrew was a farmer, a minister, and the county coroner. In 1881 they moved to the town of Guthrie Center and in 1889 they moved to Des Moines.

After Mary Jane's death Andrew married Sarah Burnthy in 1914 and lived with her in Pearson, Iowa.
