William Perry Glaze enlisted in Co. L, 9th Indiana Cavalry. He was captured and in April 1865 was sent to a parole camp near Vicksburg, MS. On April 24, 1865, he and about 2,000 other recently released Union prisoners-of-war were crowded aboard the Mississippi steamboat Sultana for transport north. At 2:00 AM on April 27, 1865, when the Sultana was 7 miles north of Memphis, TN, the boilers exploded. Over 1,500 people were killed. Fortunately, Private Glaze survived.
