Thomas Jaques

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 16, at the United Lutheran Church in Eugene for Thomas E. "Tom" Jaques of Canby, formerly of Eugene, who died Sept. 10 of age-related causes. He was 82.

He was born Dec. 5, 1927, in Altoona, Iowa, to Edward and Esther Howard Jaques. He married Gladys Robinson on Sept. 6, 1952, in Eugene. She died April 3, 2004.

He graduated from high school in Des Moines, Iowa, and held a bachelor of science degree in journalism from the University of Oregon. He served as a sergeant in the Army from 1946 to 1948. He worked at The Register-Guard for 39 years, beginning as night editor in 1952, then worked as copy editor, reporter, assistant city editor, city editor and assistant managing editor, retiring Jan. 31, 1991.

Survivors include two daughters, Jeannette "Jean" Thomas of Gardner, Kan., and Patricia Nelson of Canby; a son, Robert of Portland; two sisters, Grace Brandon of Grants Pass and Gladys Mohler of Long Beach, Calif.; and 10 grandchildren; two grandchildren died previously.

Arrangements by Musgrove Family Mortuary in Eugene. Burial will be at West Lawn Memorial Park in Eugene.
