John was born to David Brown and Elizabeth Kindle. At age seventeen, he enlisted as a private to fight for Indiana in the Civil War. At the end of his three year enlistment he had risen to the rank of Sargeant in company F of the 120th Indiana infantry. After the war, he married Sarah Jane Clark in Gibson County, Indiana on January 17, 1869. They had:

3) Amanda Elizabeth on 20 Oct 1872
4) Arthur F on 21 Aug 1874
