Karen was born in Hamilton, NY as the oldest of four children and lived as a child on her family's farm in Eaton, NY. She attended SUNY Morrisville for the first two years of college, the Rochester Institute of Technology. She graduated from RIT in 1975. She received her master's degree from West Coast University in California in 1977.

She moved to California in 1975 and worked for Rockwell International and Hughes Aircraft as a software engineer. For the last three years of her life the was a software consultant.

Her claim to fame and resume headline was: "My software survives hurricanes".. This indeed was true as her software installed at Hawaii Electric in Honolulu did not fail once when the island was struck by a hurricane in 1982.

In her personal life Karen was married to Don Bourgeois in Eaton, NY on April 22,1978. Together they had one daughter, Jennifer, born in 1989.

Karen was survived by her parents, Jean and Albie Omerso, a bother John Omerso, sisters Nancy Orth and Janet Omerso, her husband Don and daughter Jennifer.
