Rufus was born in Union, Utah to John Henry Walker Jr. and Mary Alice Graham. He was the 4th child born to the couple. Rufus' mother died in 1902 along with a baby brother. After her death his father remarried Clara Elizabeth Beeny in about 1905.

After Rufus' father died in 1917, Rufus enlisted in the army in April of 1918. He served in Co. L, 362 Infantry of the 91st Division in World War I and was a part of the Allies 100 Days Offensive. His division saw action at Meuse-Argonne, France and Ypres-Lys, Belgium.

When he was honorably discharged in April 1919 he went to live with his Grandmother Mary Ann Walker. He is found on the 1920 census with her and his sister Nora and brother Philip in Salt Lake County.

Rufus married Mary Maudie Smith 11 May 1923 in Salt Lake City. Mary had been previously married to Clarence Proctor who died in 1920. Together Rufus and Mary had one child Aaron Eugene born in 1924.

The couple divorced in 1925 and Rufus is found on the 1940 census living at the Veterans Administration Facility in Beverly Hills, California. Eventually he moved to Reno, Nevada where he died in 1959 at the Veteran's Hospital.
