Civil War Medal of Honor Recipient. An immigrant from Germany, in support of the Union at the start of the Civil War, he enlisted and was commissioned a Captain in the 1st Ohio Light Artillery Corps. On May 2, 1863, he commanded Artillery Battery 1 of the 11th Corps, as the Federal right collapsed during the Battle of Chancellorsville, Virginia. For heroism and complete dedication to duty under enemy attack, he was awarded the Medal of Honor on August 17, 1893. The citation reads "Fought his guns until the enemy were upon him, then with one gun hauled in the road by hand he formed the rear guard and kept the enemy at bay by the rapidity of his fire and was the last man in the retreat."
