Dr. Robert Alexander Cony of Augusta dies suddenly at his home on Sunday afternoon, about five o’clock, of paralysis of the heart. The doctor had been in quite feeble health for several months. He rode out on the afternoon of his death, and had returned but a few moments previously. He died while sitting in his chair engaged in conversation with a friend. Dr. Cony was born in Augusta, on the 7th of April, 1806. His father was the late General Samuel Cony, his grandfather Hon. Daniel Cony, and he was a brother of the late Governor Samuel Cony. He was educated at the military academy at West Point, afterwards studied medicine with Dr. Thomas Sewall of Washington city, and practiced for some time in the State of Virginia. From thence he returned to Augusta, where after a few years’ practice he retired to a farm on the east side of the river, and devoted himself to agricultural pursuits for the rest of his life. He was chosen representative to the State legislature in 1836 with Alfred Redington, and in 1841 with John Arnold, and was selectman in 1847, ‘8, ‘9. During the war, when both political parties united in sending representatives to the State legislature, he was active in bringing about union of action and harmony of feeling. His wife, the daughter of the late Simeon Whitter of Hallowell, and four children, are still living.
