By an intent to marry pub. at Falmouth, Mass. Sept. 3, 1707 [Metcalfe, Joseph, Rev., and Abiel Adams, intention Sept. 3, 1707], Joseph m. Abiel Adams, dau. of Rev. William Adams (2nd pastor of the Dedham Cong. Chh.) and his 2nd wife Alice Bradford, b. Dec. 15, 1685 at Dedham. No record can be found of their actual date of marriage. Abiel was the maternal granddaughter of Maj. William Bradford and his 1st wife Alice Richards, the former the eldest son of Gov. William Bradford of the 1620 Mayflower passage and Plymouth Colony by his 2nd wife, Alice Carpenter.
Following Rev. Metcalf's death, Abiel m. 2) as his 2nd wife, Rev. Isaac Chauncey, who d. May 2, 1745 at Hadley, Mass. Abiel d. July 30, 1758 at Mansfield, Conn.
Rev. Metcalf and Abiel Adams had the following seven recorded children at Falmouth, all daughters, who lived beyond infancy to marry:

• iii. Hannah Metcalf, twin, b. May 2, 1712, was living in June 1774; m. her cousin, Dea. Timothy Metcalf, s. of Ebenezer Metcalf and Hannah Abell, b. circa 1710. He d. Mar. 10, 1773 at Mansfield, Conn.
• iv. Mary Metcalf, b. Dec. 17, 1715, was living in 1781; m. July 1, 1745 at Norwich, Conn., Daniel Rudd, s. Nathaniel Rudd and Abigail Hartshorn, b. Mar. 12, 1709/10 at Norwich. He d. in 1781.
• v. Elizabeth Metcalf, b. Mar. 6, 1716/7, d. Feb. 22, 1762 at Salisbury, Conn; m. Rev. Jonathan Lee, s. of David Lee and Lydia Strong, b. July 10, 1718 at Coventry, Conn. He d. Oct. 8, 1788 at Salisbury, Conn.
• vi. Delight Metcalf, b. May 1, 1719, d. bef 1753; m. June 7, 1737 at Mansfield, Conn., Thomas Warner, s. Andrew Warner and Deborah Leffingwell, b. in Apr. 1705 at Windham, Conn. He d. in 1756 at Ashfield, Conn.
• vii. Sarah Metcalf, b. Feb. 10, 1720/1, d. June 1, 1779 at East Haddam, Conn.; m. Feb. 13, 1747/8 at Lebanon, Conn. (also recorded at East Haddam), Rev. Joseph Fowler, Jr., s. Joseph Fowler and Hannah Clark, b. Dec. 5, 1722 at Suffield, Conn. He d. June 10, 1771 at East Haddam.
