Captain John Bliss was a graduate of West Point Military Academy, Class of 1811. After he graduated from West Point, he entered the War of 1812 as an Ensign. He married Olive Hall Simonds, the daughter of Captain Arad Simonds on November 10, 1814. When the Army was discharged in peace in 1815 he was Captain in Staff. He was then appointed Quarter Master in the forwarding and commission business. He was sent to Mobile Point, Alabama to superintend the building of fortifications, where he died at the age of 36 years.
