Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. At the outbreak of the Civil War, he mustered a company of men known as the 1st Vermont Volunteer Infantry and was appointed Sergeant. Commissioned Captain of the 5th Vermont Volunteer Infantry in September 1861, he fought at White Oak Swamp and was promoted Lieutenant Colonel in October, 1862. During service in the Wilderness, Virginia, he was severely wounded and lost an arm. After recovering, he was made Colonel in September, 1864 and commanded the Veteran Reserve Corps for the remainder of the war. For gallant service in the Wilderness, he was brevetted Brigadier General of US Volunteers on March 13, 1865. He remained in the Regular Army and retired at the rank of Colonel in 1872.
